2007 Multimodal Annotation Tools Workshops

This site hosts information about two workshops held on June 20, 2007 at the International Society for Gesture Studies Third International Conference.

The first workshop was for end-users of various multimodal annotation tools. The goal is to help end-users decide which (if any) tool would work best for the user's own particular research.

The second workshop was for developers of various multimodal annotation tools. The goal is to promote interoperability of annotations among the tools.

These workshops continued the themes of two workshops held at the previous ISGS conference.

End-User Workshop

Here is the original End-User Workshop Description, written as the workshop was being planned.

Developer Workshop

Here is a description of the workshop, which has drafted an interoperability format to exchange annotations between various multimodal annotation tools.

Here are briefings from the workshop.

The proposed annotation interoperability format is based on Annotation Graphs (AGs). Here is information about the format (and sample Java code which converts from ELAN format into AG and back again). This code was based on the Annotation Graph Toolkit.

Here is a summary to date of the interoperability format.

Here are sample annotation files to convert. These annotations were created at a previous related workshop held at the previous ISGS conference.

Here are are some sample converted files. Some of these are on a common data clip: the "pear-story retelling", found in the sample files mentioned above.

Here is a link to code/techniques for interchange.

Here is a threaded developer discussion about possible interoperability formats.
